Smithsonian Giant Squid Photos

12 October 2008 No Comment

The Smithsonian’s Museum of Natural History has on display a duo of architeuthids, more commonly, giant squid. These specimens were donated by Spain’s CEPESMA organization.

The new display housing appeared to be refridgerated with the actual giant squid body covered with some type of resin and suspended in the air by rods. The method worked very well and I presume it will keep the animal in far better condition than the previous display specimen.

The animal was smaller than I antcipated. Maybe it comes from years of seeing the giant squid and sperm whale battle diarama in New York’s American Museum of Natural History. Either way, it was still an interesting exhibit.
