Grave of the Fireflies releasing through Resonance

As some of you may know I’m on the advisory board of Resonance Features and I’m very proud to announce that we’re releasing the 20th anniversary edition of “Grave of the Fireflies” with special promotional theatrical screenings to support the pay-per-view release on Dish Network (November).

If you’re not familiar with the film, Roger Ebert says, “Grave of the Fireflies belongs on any list of the greatest war films ever made.” IMDB gives it 8.2 out of 10 stars and has an 89% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The film is set in a world-war II era Japan where a young boy and his sister fight for survival. The movie was produced by Studio Ghibli famed for its groundbreaking “My Neighbor Totoro” and Oscar winning “Spirited Away”.

Kinokuniya Cosplay Event

I wasn’t planning on going down there (I had a ton of work to do) but I got a text from Jessie and Sonnya asking me to stop by and I figured something like this only comes around in a blue moon, so I tossed on something presentable and jumped a train.

The downstairs area had a few people in costumes walking around, enough that I thought the cosplay Q & A that Renee and Sonnya was doing *might be in the back of the place.  But I soon learned it was up the escalator on the third floor.

At the end of a sea of what looked like teenaged girls and some unusual men I found them. The turn out was huge and people could barely move on the top floor. Jessie and Peter waved me to the front and I scraped by a crowd of soul reapers who were violently opposed to deodorant.

It was interesting. There was a Japanese television crew there, a Japanese radio program did a thirty minute broadcast with them. Tons of cameras. Everywhere… cameras.

Sonnya was given a hybrid of two things she loves, cake and Spider-Man. Afterward we went for some Katsu and that was that.

I did like the bookstore. Kinokuniya has a good setup and I’d like to visit more often. They also carry art supplies and other things that you might not think to look for. I was actually very surprised about the bottom floor. It was like a Japanese Borders. Hardcovers, cook books, it was interesting.
